AI dialer that places the call and holds the conversation

A traditional dialer just connects a human faster. An AI dialer goes further: it places the call and then holds the conversation itself, qualifying the prospect and booking the meeting without a rep waiting on the line.

ColdCalls.ai dials your list, talks naturally, handles objections, and books qualified prospects into your calendar with the outcome synced to your CRM. It is compliance-first, so every call discloses the AI, your DNC list is suppressed, and dialing happens only inside the calling hours and consent rules you configure.

SHORT ANSWER Last updated July 2026

An AI dialer is software that places outbound calls and then holds the conversation itself with a synthetic voice, instead of just connecting a human rep faster. Traditional auto dialers and parallel dialers like Orum or Nooks still need a seated rep on every answered call. An AI dialer like ColdCalls.ai dials your list, discloses it is an AI, qualifies the prospect, handles objections and books the meeting, so cost scales with call volume rather than headcount.

Why it works

What your team gets with AI dialer

Dials and talks

The AI dialer does not just connect a call, it carries the conversation, qualifying and booking so no rep sits waiting between dials.

Smart pacing

It manages call volume and retries within your configured limits, keeping outbound steady without overwhelming your list or team.

Compliant dialing

AI disclosure, DNC suppression and calling-hour limits are enforced on every number it dials.

What it handles

Dialed, disclosed and booked on autopilot

The agent works your lead list, discloses it is an AI on every call, scrubs against DNC in real time, qualifies the prospect, handles objections, and books the meeting straight into your calendar and CRM.

  • Places outbound calls automatically
  • Holds the conversation and qualifies leads
  • Books meetings and logs outcomes to CRM
  • Manages retries within your calling hours
  • Discloses AI and suppresses DNC numbers

What happens when nobody answers, and what a voicemail costs

Most dials end in voicemail, which means the way a dialer handles an unanswered call decides more of your economics than the way it handles a connected one.

There are three separate things people call a voicemail drop and they are not interchangeable. The first is a dialer feature: the system places a real call, detects a voicemail greeting, and plays a prerecorded message into it so the rep does not have to repeat themselves forty times an hour. The second is ringless voicemail, where nothing is dialed at all and the message is deposited straight onto the carrier's voicemail platform. The third is what our agent does, which is leave a message on a call it actually placed and had a live attempt at.

The distinction is legal as much as technical. FCC 22-85, adopted November 14, 2022, held that a ringless voicemail to a wireless phone is a call made with a prerecorded voice under 47 U.S.C. 227(b)(1)(A)(iii), so it needs the called party's prior express consent. A cold list does not carry that consent. Meanwhile the price of ringless voicemail is genuinely low, from about $0.015 to $0.02 a drop at LeadsRain up to $0.045 a delivered voicemail at Slybroadcast, which is exactly why teams reach for it before checking the consent question. We priced seven providers and set out the ruling in full on ringless voicemail service.

For a dialer buyer the practical takeaway is narrower. Ask whether the platform detects an answering machine reliably, how long that detection adds to the front of every connected call, and whether a dropped message writes a disposition back to your CRM. Answering machine detection that guesses wrong is worse than none, because it either burns a live prospect with two seconds of silence or wastes a drop on a person who said hello.

  • A dialer voicemail drop happens on a call that was actually placed, ringless voicemail is not a dial at all
  • FCC 22-85 treats ringless voicemail to a mobile number as a prerecorded call needing prior express consent
  • Published ringless rates run about $0.015 to $0.045 depending on vendor, volume and billing unit
  • Ask about answering machine detection accuracy and whether drops write a disposition back to the CRM

Where an AI dialer sits next to preview, power and predictive dialing

Every conventional dialing mode exists to solve the same scarcity problem: an agent can only be on one call at a time, so the system has to keep them fed. Preview dialing lets the rep choose. Progressive places one call per free rep. Power places one call per available rep at speed. Parallel opens several lines for one rep and drops whichever ones lose the race. Predictive dials ahead of availability using pacing algorithms, which is where abandoned calls come from.

An AI dialer removes the constraint rather than managing it. There is no seated rep waiting to be matched to an answer, so there is no ratio to tune, no pacing model to get wrong and no abandoned call created by a bad guess about talk time. We break down the trade-offs between the conventional modes in predictive dialer vs power dialer, the pacing mode itself and its published vendor prices on predictive dialer software, the one-call-per-rep mode and what thirteen vendors charge for it on power dialer software, the multi-line mode and its line ceilings on parallel dialer software, and the platform pricing for each is compared on our outbound call center software and auto dialer software pages. If you are weighing a dialer against simply outsourcing the calling to an agency, we published what eight of them charge on cold calling services. If you are comparing the conventional systems on price first, the per-seat figures and licence minimums for fifteen of them are on outbound calling software.

If you are still choosing between dialing modes and vendors, we priced sixteen of them side by side, including which ones publish a figure at all, on best dialer for cold calling. When the shortlist is down to two specific names, the head to head pairs are worked through on our PhoneBurner vs Nooks vs FrontSpin comparison.

If you are pricing the seat-based options against each other first, the published figures, seat floors and add-on lines are on auto dialer pricing.

  • Preview and progressive: safest, lowest volume, rep decides or dials one at a time
  • Power: two to four lines per rep, the practical default for most SDR teams
  • Predictive: highest volume, needs a large floor, abandonment capped at 3% by the TSR
  • AI dialer: no seat to keep busy, so volume is not limited by headcount

What actually limits your connect rate, and what does not

Switching dialing modes changes how many numbers you touch per hour. It does not change how many of them answer. Gong's analysis of 300 million calls put the average B2B connect rate at 5.4% and the top quartile at 13.3%, and that spread comes from list accuracy, call timing and caller ID reputation rather than from pacing.

Caller reputation is the one most teams underestimate. Carriers apply spam labels based on calling patterns, and a burst of short calls from one number is exactly the pattern that triggers them. Once a number is flagged, no dialer recovers the answer rate. Rotate numbers, register them properly, and track answer rate per number instead of across the whole campaign. The full remediation process is in our guide to how to avoid Spam Likely on outbound calls, and the benchmark math is in our cold call connect rate benchmarks. Timing is a different problem on inbound leads, where the useful window is minutes rather than days, and that side is covered on our speed to lead software page.

  • Average B2B connect rate 5.4%, top quartile 13.3% (Gong, 300M calls)
  • List accuracy and call timing move connect rate far more than pacing does
  • Spam labeling kills answer rate and no dialing mode fixes it
  • Track answer rate per outbound number, not as a campaign average

Good questions

Questions about AI dialer

An auto dialer dials numbers and routes live answers to a human rep. An AI dialer dials and then handles the conversation itself, qualifying and booking, so you do not need a rep standing by for every call.
Yes. DNC suppression is built in. Numbers on your internal DNC and the lists you connect are skipped automatically, and the dialer only places calls within the hours and consent rules you configure.
It depends on whether you want a rep on the line. Parallel dialers like Orum and Nooks are the best fit if you have seated reps and want them connected to live humans faster. If you want the calls made and the meetings booked without a rep dialing, an AI SDR like ColdCalls.ai handles the conversation itself.
Most conventional dialers are priced per rep seat, so the cost scales with headcount: published per-seat sales platforms run from roughly $180 to $499 per user per month, and parallel dialing is often a paid add-on. ColdCalls.ai is a flat per-seat managed fee starting at $499 a month for one AI SDR seat, so you are licensing an AI agent rather than a human rep.
Yes. When a call goes to voicemail the agent can drop a short, consistent message and disposition the record, then follow the retry cadence you set. Because it dials concurrently, working a large list of no-answers costs nothing extra in rep time.
Yes, and it is one of its real advantages. Connect rates peak in two local windows, roughly 10 to 11 a.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. in the prospect's time zone. A human rep can only be in one time zone at a time, but an AI dialer can work the whole list against each contact's local clock, hitting the East Coast morning window and the West Coast window on the same day.
They automate opposite halves of the call. AI sales-assist platforms such as Dialpad speed up and coach a human rep who is still doing the talking, with real-time assist, transcription and a power dialer. An AI dialer places the call and holds the conversation itself, so no rep is on the line. Our Dialpad alternative comparison lays out a side-by-side of who actually talks on each and how they are priced.
A predictive dialer places more calls than there are free agents and uses pacing algorithms to predict when one will come available, which is why it produces abandoned calls when the prediction is wrong. An AI dialer has no agent to keep busy, because the AI voice holds the call itself. Predictive dialing is capped by the FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule at 3% abandoned calls per campaign over 30 days. An AI dialer does not create that exposure, since every answered call is picked up by the agent that placed it.
It depends on whether you have reps to keep busy. For a staffed team, a power dialer at two to three lines per rep is the practical default, with PhoneBurner at $140 to $183 per user per month or a parallel dialer like Nooks or Orum if dial volume is your bottleneck. Enterprise floors run predictive dialing on Five9, Convoso or Genesys Cloud CX. If you do not have reps to seat, an auto dialer solves the wrong problem and an AI dialer that holds the call is the better buy.
